that thing about Oikawa being considered one of the top anime villains alongside actual serial killers is like very obviously a cute joke but if you think about it hard enough it kinda wraps back around to being true?

like ok obviously Oikawa isn’t ‘evil’, he isn’t a murderer and isn’t even really a villain by definition, but Haikyuu is an anime in which the volleyball games are their version of ‘battles’ and the opposing teams are ‘enemies’. And Oikawa is the first real formidable ‘enemy’ introduced in Haikyuu.

his intelligence and ability to pick up on Karasuno’s subtle signaling is downright frightening, he targets his serve to specific players with the literal intention of wearing down their morale and mental fortitude. He’s calculating, manipulative, and makes the audience worry about the fate of the heroes. To me, that sounds like an interesting ‘villain’ worth praising.
